About

Bicycles for Humanity (B4H) DFW is a charity based here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that empowers disadvantaged communities in Africa through the provision of sustainable transportation.

We send gently used bikes to help improve access to healthcare, education, food, water, employment and social opportunities.

B4H is entirely volunteer run – 100% of donations go toward the transportation and in-country project implementation costs of Bicycle Empowerment Centers (BECs).

A bicycle, one of the simplest transport technologies, is affordable and can be maintained anywhere in the world with minimal tools and spare parts. Yet for the world’s poorest people, living on $1 per day, even bicycles are beyond their reach. Meanwhile, in the western world we discard thousands of bicycles each year.

Simply put – unused bicycles in garages or basements can make an incredible difference to those in need of transportation to receive or provide healthcare, to get to work, or to attend school. Such bicycles represent a terrific opportunity to change the lives of those less fortunate.

Our goal is to send a container of 500 bicycles to the Karamoja region of Uganda in 2015. In addition to collecting bicycles and parts (tubes, tools, etc.), the typical costs to purchase and ship a container to Uganda will be roughly $12,000. We will also be looking for partners to provide bicycle drop-off locations as well as a warehouse space for storage of bicycles. Anything you can do to help in the effort will be greatly appreciated!

Once the containers arrive in Africa, they become a Bicycle Empowerment Center (BEC). The Bicycle Empowerment Centre (BEC) is a bicycle shop in a box, ready to be delivered to any community in a developing country. Stocked with 450-500 bicycles, tools, spare parts and accompanied by comprehensive training in bicycle mechanics, it is designed to empower disadvantaged people and their communities with their own transport and their own means of maintaining it.
